(MILWAUKEE, WI, 5/28/2026) – Today, in a 16 to 2 vote, Milwaukee County Supervisors overwhelmingly passed a resolution uplifting the call for ICE to release Salah Sarsour, a long-time legal resident and Palestinian community leader from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On Wednesday this week, six Democratic members of Congress, led by Rep. Gwen Moore (WI-4), led a letter directed to Secretary Mullen, calling on the DHS to honor Sarsour’s legal rights and expressing concerns around his health and treatment in ICE custody.
The efforts follow a similar letter to Secretary Mullen led by Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin alongside Senators Bernie Sanders and Chris Van Hollen last week. Such legislative pressure comes as Sarsour’s legal team continues to push for its habeas petition to be heard in a federal court hearing, to secure Sarsour’s release. Separately, Sarsour’s next immigration court hearing takes place on June 10th.
Over 25,000 letters have been sent to Members of Congress calling for them to speak out against an unconstitutional and unprecedented attack on a legal U.S. resident with a clean record. Over 200 organizations have joined Sarsour’s community in Milwaukee in expressing outrage at the targeting of a Palestinian and Muslim community leader for his outspoken opposition to US complicity in Israeli military occupation, apartheid, and genocide as defined by international experts.
Fauzia Qureshi, Executive Director of Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance, said, “Milwaukee County stood on the right side of history today. Supervisors looked at Salah Sarsour’s case and saw the truth: this is a wrongful and unconstitutional detention of a community leader. An overwhelming number of community members have been calling their representatives to do the right thing. And as a credit to our collective advocacy, four Supervisors who did not vote for the resolution at the committee level voted in favor in the general vote.” Qureshi and a member of Salah’s family also testified in committee in support of this resolution.
Milwaukee County Supervisor Jack Eckblad said, “I am proud that today the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that declares that the residents of Milwaukee County have not forgotten – and will not forget – the harm that has been done across this country; harm to children, families, immigrants, citizens, and non-citizens alike, and most without any criminal charge or conviction.”
