Federal Court Hears Medical Concerns of Salah Sarsour in ICE Detention

A status conference on Salah Sarsour’s case indicates a decision is still pending but medical concerns were raised as Sarsour lost 30 pounds in two months and faces medical neglect.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin (6/8/2026) — In a status conference today, Salah Sarsour’s legal team affirmed the urgency of their case for his release from ICE detention and concerns for his health given his drastic weight loss since March and declining strength. This update comes on the heels of his family, community and legal team’s public appeal surrounding the shocking news of Sarsour’s deteriorating health, medical neglect, and religious discrimination in Clay County Detention Center.

“We had the opportunity to make a direct, urgent appeal to the court about the need for Salah’s release, including being able to report that he has lost a staggering 30 pounds while in detention,” said Luna Droubi, an attorney for Salah. “The Judge raised questions about the medical care Salah is receiving, and we will continue to press this case.”

Salah’s family and legal team now await the judge’s decision on his release. Sarsour has experienced a noticeable decline in his health while in detention; he has lost 30 pounds since March 30th when he was suddenly surrounded by over 10 ICE agents and taken out of state and into ICE detention despite his legal residence in the U.S. for over 30 years.

“Just over two months ago, my dad would have been starting his day as usual by checking in on my grandmother and heading to work,” said Kareem Sarsour, Salah’s son. “We’re not only fighting now for my dad’s legal right to be here, but also for his health—and basic due process guaranteed by his constitutional rights to speak up about injustice.”

Sarsour’s lawyers not only believe his medical needs are not being met, but that his illegal imprisonment, including denying him basic religious needs, is unnecessarily punitive, further establishing the need for his urgent release. In response to requests for an adequate diet to stabilize his blood sugar levels as a Type-2 diabetic, the government responded by letting Sarsour know that he could purchase BBQ pork rinds from the commissary, a food that would violate his religious beliefs and dietary restrictions.
